COUNTY FOCUS

Catron - If you’re hiking, camping, or enjoying a scenic drive through a remote and pristine national forest in southern New Mexico, chances are you’re in the Gila National Forest in Catron County.

Dona Ana - Doña Ana, the second most populated county in the state of New Mexico, is home to nearly 200,000 people and is expected to grow to 300,000 by the year 2015.

Grant - Grant County, located in southwestern New Mexico, was named to honor President Ulysses S. Grant.

Hidalgo –Lordsburg, the county seat of Hidalgo County, was one of the stops on Charles Lindbergh’s famous 1927 transcontinental flight.

Luna - Named after Solomon Luna, a local politician and cattle rancher, Luna County was created in 1901 from Grant and Doña Ana counties.

Otero - The county seat and largest city is Alamogordo, a name derived from the Spanish word for “cottonwood.” Founded in 1898 as a railroad town, Alamogordo today is home to Holloman Air Force Base.

Sierra - Bubbling geothermal hot springs, Elephant Butte Reservoir, Caballo Lake and Percha Dam make Sierra County a popular destination for New Mexicans.

Socorro - Socorro is home to Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge, one of the most spectacular refuges in North America.
