Wednesday, February 2, 2011Jeff has been talking about energy policy a lot this week. As the Chairman of the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee, this isn't unusual for Jeff, but this week has been an especially busy one. Today, he went to the White House to speak with President Obama about how to build support for bipartisan energy bill. Jeff was pleased to hear some of the president's priorities in last week's State of the Union, and looks forward to creating bipartisan legislation that will help the country move forward as we transition to a clean energy economy. And on Monday, he delivered a speech highlighting his energy own priorities for the 112th Congress. A portion of the speech outlined four ways the U.S. can stay in front of the developing market of new energy technologies, including supporting scientists and innovators engaging in energy research and development and developing policies that encourage American manufacturers to produce clean energy technologies. You can listen to Jeff's speech, or read the text, online. Tuesday, January 26, 2011Jeff chaired the first Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee hearing of the 112th Congress this morning. This hearing is one that Jeff and many Americans have been waiting for—reviewing the report and recommendations issued by the National Commission on the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill and Offshore Drilling. The Commission was established May 2010 to examine the causes of last April's Deepwater Horizon explosion, and to develop options to protect and mitigate the impact of future offshore oil spills. The Commission's final report was published two weeks before today's hearing and has been presented to the president. Jeff has been concerned about the impact of the spill, including its effect on the environment and energy production. He is also interested in ways Congress can help prevent such disasters from ever happening again, and will take the Commission's findings into consideration as he works to craft a bipartisan bill. Jeff watched last night's State of the Union address; you can watch his response on YouTube. |
