National Security
Our nation must provide for a strong and competent military that is appropriately prepared for a variety of threats to our national security. In particular, the threat of terrorist attacks against Americans at home and abroad remains a grave concern. Beyond using our conventional military, I believe we also need to address the roots of terrorism and change the context within which terror develops and evolves.

WHAT YOU’RE ASKING
RECENT ACCOMPLISHMENTS
- Co-sponsored legislation to provide much-needed federal assistance to local fire departments for equipment, training, and fire prevention campaigns
- Requested funding for construction of the Las Cruces courthouse. The new building would house the district court, bankruptcy court, probation office, pretrial services office, U.S. Trustee, and Marshals Services
- Secured funds for the Santa Clara Volunteer Fire Department
- Cosponsor of the Assistance to Firefighters Act to reauthorize the Assistance to Firefighter Grant program (AFG), which provides federal assistance to local fire departments for equipment, training, and fire prevention campaigns
- Sponsored the “Border Law Enforcement Relief Act of 2005” to (among other things) establish a grant program within the Department of Homeland Security to help local law enforcement situated along the border cover some of the costs they incur as a result border-related criminal activity
- Cosponsored an amendment to a key spending bill to pay for the training of 500 new border patrol agents
- Secured millions of dollars to construct vehicle barriers along the New-Mexico-Mexico Border
- Secured $1 million dollars in the DOD Appropriations bill for the New Mexico National Guard Counter Drug Program for border security related projects
- Established the Southwest New Mexico Border Security Task force (BTSF) to bring together member of local communities, federal agencies, and law enforcement, to discuss concrete ways to improve border security
- Helped secure encrypted radios for border residents that enable them to contact police and Border Patrol to seek assistance and report criminal activity.
