Healthcare decision making by Congress
Our country spends more on health care than any country in the world, and the government of the United States buys more health care than any other employer or insurance company in the country. In
spite of this, we do not have enough money to buy all the health care services that people cannot afford to pay for themselves. That means that every year, Congress faces hard decisions about what services
will be paid for and who is eligible to receive those government paid services.
During this seminar you will play the role of Congress, who must decide how our health care dollars are spent. There are no wrong decisions, just hard ones.
Questions to Consider
- How does the government get the money needed to pay for health services?
- Since we can't afford to pay for all health care all people, which is better:
- Pay for all health care services for some of the people? Which people?
- Pay for some health care services for all the people? Which services?
- Why is it important to prevent the people of New Mexico and the United States from being sick?
